Connecting Research to Practice: Improving Adolescent Literacy: Effective Classroom and Intervention Practices Racine, Wisconsin
The REL Midwest in collaboration with Great Lakes West Comprehension Center provided a full-day event on improving adolescent literacy. This event was designed to provide educators and stakeholders with research-based information on improving adolescent literacy. The event featured Terry Salinger, Ph.D., chief scientist of reading research at the American Institutes for Research. Dr. Salinger delivered a presentation and an overview of the recommendations in the IES Practice Guide Improving Adolescent Literacy: Effective Classroom and Intervention Practices, with a focus on recommendations for districts and schools.
The event also featured Dr. Don Deshler from the University of Kansas, Dr. Jim Lindsay from REL Midwest, and Susan Sepanik, research associate at MDRC; they gave the audience a general overview of the interventions from two recent randomized controlled trial studies supported by IES: the Enhanced Reading Opportunities (ERO) study and the evaluation of the Content Literacy Continuum (CLC) intervention. Dr. Deshler, Dr. Lindsay, and Ms. Sepanik discussed the interventions and research design, which was followed by tabletop discussions with the audience.
