NCREL® Puts Reading First With Help From New Grant

NCREL Awarded Nearly $1.5 Million to Provide Assistance to States

March 13, 2003

Naperville, IL — The North Central Regional Educational Laboratory (NCREL) was recently awarded $1,474,042 by the U.S. Department of Education to provide technical assistance for the Reading First program to state education agencies (SEAs) nationwide, including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Recognized as leader in technical assistance for educators and education leaders, NCREL brings extensive and relevant experience to this project.

NCREL will partner with the Regional Educational Laboratory at SERVE to provide training and resources to better prepare SEA staff to assist their states. Although plans are in the early stages of development, some of the resources may include a national list of reviewers to judge Reading First subgrants, a toolkit with adaptable materials for each state, and a Web site for online support. In addition, a training module for reviewers will present the necessary information to effectively assess subgrant applications.

Reading First is considered to be one of the most important components of the No Child Left Behind Act, ensuring that schools use scientifically based curricula and teaching methods. Funding in the amount of $900 million was allocated to states, the District of Columbia, and the Territories to pave the way for the implementation of the program.
