Ohio Early Language and Literacy Classroom Observation (ELLCO)

Learning Point Associates is using the ELLCO tool to measure the quality of literacy instruction and the professional development needs of teachers in state-funded early learning programs in child care settings, public school preschool programs and Grade K–5 classrooms in school districts designated as "in need of improvement."
The evaluation includes observing a stratified random sample of classrooms in the three settings and reporting statewide and regional results. Observations will be conducted three times during 2008 and 2009, and results will be analyzed descriptively, using a variety of statistical and psychometric approaches. This analysis will provide the Ohio Department of Education with information on the capacity of classrooms to provide quality literacy instruction, inform professional development for teachers in the programs, and evaluate the effectiveness of the ELLCO tool in elementary school classrooms.
