A Day in the Life

2:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The Sparks students gather in the cafeteria to start their afternoon with a snack. Attendance is taken, announcements are made, and students' agendas are checked by after-school staff. Teachers are in their classrooms and available if there are any questions about homework assignments.

3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Students break into small groups and move to classrooms for homework help. The low student/teacher ratio (9:1) allows teachers to address individual students' needs and develop stronger relationships. At Sparks, students do homework with their friends or with their teachers. Others who are motivated to finish move on to the library. The rest go to enrichment activities.

4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
At 4:00, classrooms become the home base for enrichment activities. A computer lab offers math games. A senior from a neighboring high school introduces different math games, in German. Some students go on a field trip to the Myrick Conservation Center to develop cooperative learning skills. Students can also choose from electives including karate, dance, bike repair, arts and crafts, soccer, sewing, or hockey.

5:00 p.m. to 5:10 p.m.
Students sign out and leave. Students can be picked up as late as 5:30.


What are agendas?

The agenda is an assignment book used to help students stay on track with their homework. As students jot down their homework in each class throughout the day, the teacher assigning the work initials the agenda. If there is no homework, the teachers initial that, too. Students who have completed their agenda two weeks in a row are rewarded. (Go back.)
