Product Description

CSOS is an observational instrument using systems constructs common to both families and classrooms. CSOS is specifically designed to assess classroom function and is based on Olson’s Circumplex Model of Marital and Family systems. During each observation, specific behaviors illustrating the dimensions of cohesion, flexibility, and communication are identified and “plotted” on an ecomap. This process provides a visual representation of classroom functioning. The use of a systems perspective focuses on the analysis of the interactional patterns of all members of a system and emphasizes children’s social context as critical to the understanding of functioning. CSOS has diverse uses in assessment, intervention, research, and teacher training.

Cost
There is no charge for use for research purposes, or for a single copy of the manual, article, and protocol. If additional copies are needed, it would be necessary to cover costs of the manuals ($10.00 each).

Support Available
Training is generally carried out using classroom videos and/or classroom observations. Inter-rater reliability of .8 or above is desirable. Marian Fish is available for consultation.
