Developer
This product was developed by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, Early Child Care Research Network. The lead researcher for this specific instrument was Robert Pianta (who later led the development of the CLASS protocols).

Product Description
COS examines student behavior and classroom conditions. Specific instruments have been designed to examine kindergarten classrooms using COS-K, Grade 1 classrooms using COS-1, Grade 3 classrooms using COS-3, and Grade 5 classrooms using COS-5.

General Target Population Information
Created to be used in the long-term National Institute of Child Health and Human Development study of Early Child Care and Youth Development. The COS observations were one data point in the longitudinal study that considered many aspects of child development.

Research and Resources
