Instructions on Using the Adobe Acrobat PDF Map

These PDFs contain layers that enable you (with Adobe Acrobat and Reader 6.0 and higher) to isolate and/or locate specific content, such as schools with the lowest or highest dropout rates. For example, each state map includes an inset for at least one major metropolitan area. So on the Indiana map you may want to activate layers to see the general location of Indianapolis districts with the lowest dropout rates. Or you may want to select the entire state and see the general distribution of districts with the highest dropout rates. By turning layers on and off, custom maps can be generated to suit your specific needs. Maps will print exactly as they are displayed onscreen.

To use this functionality:

  1. Choose View > Navigation Panels > Layers. (Figure 1 at right)

An alternate method to bring up the Layers palette is to click on the "Layer" icon to the left of the document.

  1. To hide a layer, click the eye icon Eye Icon. To show a hidden layer, click the empty box Eye Icon. (A layer is visible when the eye icon is present, and hidden when the eye icon is absent.)

Click on the "+"/"-" icon to expand/collapse layers. In a nested layer group, if the parent layer is hidden, the nested layers are automatically hidden as well. If the parent layer is visible, nested layers can be made visible or hidden.

Note: A Lock icon in the Layers panel indicates that a layer is for information only. The visibility of a locked layer cannot be changed.
