Welcome to the Midwest Education Atlas
The content of these webpages was created under the 2006-2011 REL Midwest contract that ended December 31, 2011. This site is now archived and no longer being updated.
Visit our new websiteThe use of geographic information system (GIS) technology helps us see how specific data are linked to locations without having to create a mental picture from words and numbers. In our work with America's Promise Alliance, REL Midwest created a set of maps that display data on high school dropout rates over several district-level background variables, such as poverty level, minority enrollment, and mothers' education level. The maps have helped to frame conversations at state and city dropout prevention summits.
This online version of the Atlas of Education in the Midwest contains maps by topic for each state in REL Midwest's region. Each map in the table below contains a graphic and a link to an interactive, downloadable PDF. The maps present data retrieved from publicly available data sources including the U.S. Census Bureau, the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) Common Core, and state education agency websites. Materials illustrate geographic patterns and do not provide or imply causal links or relationships in the data.
For an explanation of how dropout rates were calculated for each state, see Dropout Rate Calculations for Midwestern States
