Mentoring and Induction
The support a teacher receives during the first few years in the classroom determines whether he or she will stay in the profession. It also determines the impact that teacher will have on students.
Mentoring and induction programs play a crucial role in improving teacher effectiveness and ensuring that all schools and districts have access to highly effective teachers. Our associates work with school and district staff to improve the mentoring and support provided to new teachers. We assess a school’s current program against 10 research-based components of quality induction programs.
Services for Districts and Schools:
- Data-driven assessment of current induction and mentoring practices against research-based best practices
- Tools to observe classroom practices and collect data that will illuminate professional development needs
- Technical assistance on developing programs, selecting mentors, and developing quality materials
- Ongoing training for mentors on creating culturally responsive schools and examining student work
Our staff provide the tools that mentor teachers need to objectively observe the teaching practices of new staff.
Our web-based observation toolsallow for conversations between mentors and new teachers that drive reflection, self-assessment, and improvements in teaching practices. The data also provide important insights into the professional development needs of teachers and the effectiveness of current professional development programs.
Learning Point Associates also provides technical assistance to schools and districts on program development, rigorous mentor selection, and the creation of high-quality materials. We also train mentors on creating culturally responsive schools and examining student work.
