We've identified six second graders who need help reading. They are paired with sixth- and seventh-grade students who sit with them and read a book of their choosing out loud for 20 minutes. The "teacher" reads with a student until the "student" can read on his or her own without stumbling.

What is the academic content of this activity?
Reading‚ literacy‚ discussion of literature‚ book topics and characters. Basics of tutoring and literacy development.
How does this activity create strong relationships?
Participants develop a mentoring relationship. We celebrate the accomplishments of the younger students and provide the mentors with training and leadership opportunities.
What opportunities are there for authentic decision making?
The younger participants choose the book and are encouraged to talk about elements of the book. The older students get to instruct the younger students.
What student leadership opportunities are there?
Mentoring is a crucial leadership opportunity. Younger participants gain the confidence that comes with reading approximately 20 books a year‚ and they document their accomplishments. The year culminates with a thank you/award ceremony for all involved.
