Students in the sixth grade generate a scrap book about the afterschool program. They write about the program's activities‚ take pictures and present photo samples of what they have been doing.
Number of Students Involved in This Activity: 30
Range of Student Ages: Eleventh to twelfth grade
What is the academic content of this activity?
Students are writing‚ reading and using math. They are also memorializing current events‚ which will provide useful context for them down the road.
How does this activity create strong relationships?
Program participants get a chance to have positive relationships with peers‚ adults and parents since they are all working on a common goal and interest. The subjects for this work are the people in and around the program‚ requiring students to think about the people around them and the roles they play.
What opportunities are there for authentic decision making?
The team must work together to come up with a product‚ so they are left to reflect upon the items available to them and select the best examples of the program.
What student leadership opportunities are there?
The theme and look of the book is left entirely to the students. They have editorial control of the product.
