Activity Description

The Comic Book Project is a new arts-based literacy initiative (in collaboration with Teachers College‚ Columbia University‚ and Dark Horse Comics) offered to fifth-grade students and geared toward promoting and enhancing students' skills as they relate to reading‚ writing and art. By combining text with artwork‚ staff present their literacy/artistic background and incorporate discussions about environmental awareness.

Number of Students Involved in This Activity: 20

Range of Student Ages: Ten to eleven years old (fifth grade)

Duration of Activity: 45 minutes to one hour per week

Academic ContentWhat is the academic content of this activity? Literacy Science
Science content focuses on creating an understanding and appreciation for "environmental awareness" as it relates specifically to pollution prevention and the conservation of energy. Students also use literacy skills to write the comic books and math skills to design them.

Strong RelationshipsHow does this activity create strong relationships?
There is room for discussion on many levels. Brainstorming ideas‚ concerns‚ issues‚ obstacles and solutions helps take the dialogue to new levels‚ moving everybody toward the same goal of preserving the environment for future generations.

Decision MakingWhat opportunities are there for authentic decision making?
Participants are able to further process and develop their critical thinking skills‚ as they put these new ideas‚ goals‚ solutions into final products. They make many decisions regarding what content to put into the books and how to present it.

Student LeadershipWhat student leadership opportunities are there?
Participants become increasingly pro-active about their environment. They promote their final publications through an on-line gallery as well as at a public art gallery.
