What is the academic content of this activity?
Because our students are recent immigrants‚ one of our main goals is to develop language and literacy. Most activities can be linked to state-mandated objectives in ESL or the content areas of social studies‚ science and math.
How does this activity create strong relationships?
Teachers work closely with students and groups. We guide activities‚ encourage the students‚ and model language. Sometimes we are the only person that will have a real conversation in English with the student during the day.
What opportunities are there for authentic decision making?
Students choose their groups and their activities (many varied choices are provided). They choose the form of expression they prefer: dancing‚ creating a diorama‚ teaching a game‚ etc.
What student leadership opportunities are there?
Within groups there are many opportunities for leadership. Some students lead at one type of activity but not at others. Other students lead at most activities.
