Activity Description

This program is specifically designed to educate and to serve highly nutritious meals to children at risk of hunger. Students buy ingredients‚ read recipes‚ and cook healthy meals. They learn about how to prepare nutritious meals‚ how to figure out nutrition information‚ how to budget for a meal‚ etc. The program allows these students to develop good eating habits at an early age.

Number of Students Involved in This Activity: There are approximately 125 students that participate in Kids' Cafe.

Range of Student Ages: Five to fifteen years old

Duration of Activity: Kids Cafe runs for 50 weeks‚ meeting once a week‚ for two and a half hours.

Relevant Contextual or Demographic Information: The children that participate are at-risk youth‚ living in single parent households in underserved communities.

Academic ContentWhat is the academic content of this activity? Math
The children learn and read about the importance of planning and eating nutritious meals. The children learn how to count fat calories‚ calculate saturated fats and read food labels for nutritional content. They are able to determine which foods are most cost-effective by comparing price per pound. Students use mathematical skills as they read recipes and measure ingredients for nutritious meals. They also use mathematical skills as they shop for food determining the price per pound.

Strong RelationshipsHow does this activity create strong relationships?
The children rely on the adults for guidance‚ direction on preparing meals and menus‚ and transportation to grocery stores. After cooking meals the children and adults sit down for a discussion on the cost as well as the process of planning and preparing a nutritious‚ healthy meal.

Decision MakingWhat opportunities are there for authentic decision making?
The children gain knowledge‚ which aids them in planning a healthy cost-effective and time-efficient meal for themselves and the children in their community.

Student LeadershipWhat student leadership opportunities are there?
The students lead in all aspects of this program‚ from retrieving food sales papers‚ going over the budget before shopping‚ and preparing and planning meals for the group.
