Students run a student store as part of a sports summer camp. The younger students in the camp are given points (PALbucks) based on good behavior‚ sportsmanship‚ etc. They spend these points at the store to buy backpacks‚ snacks‚ water bottles‚ etc. The older kids run the store‚ working with an adult to determine pricing and other features.
What is the academic content of this activity?
Students working at the store learn mathematics‚ how to make change‚ etc.
How does this activity create strong relationships?
Students work closely with adults to determine the workings of the store‚ how pricing works‚ what the point value of an item might be‚ etc.
What opportunities are there for authentic decision making?
Younger students make decisions about what to buy. Older students take the lead in deciding what prices should be‚ when to run sales‚ etc.
What student leadership opportunities are there?
Older students have primary control of how the store is run. They take the initiative in making decisions on all aspects of the store.
