College students read to 25 elementary age students. The college students assist the elementary students in creating their own books. A puppeteer acts out stories from books they've read and makes puppets with the children. Paramount Carowinds characters lead children in "storytelling adventure."
What is the academic content of this activity?
Promotion of literacy‚ reading comprehension and art of storytelling and narrative writing. Students learn through having college students read to them and then through creating their own books. In creating props and scenery for the production‚ students are able to learn measurement and math skills.
How does this activity create strong relationships?
This program helps to establish a relationship with college students who are pursuing a career in reading/literature or elementary education. The college students also mentor those children who aspire to seek higher education‚ to act‚ to write‚ and to produce plays.
What opportunities are there for authentic decision making?
The children create their own puppets‚ props and scenery for their production. They also manage‚ direct stage production and play direction. They have a large role in what takes place during the production.
What student leadership opportunities are there?
The children work together in groups. Each group has a group leader. As a group they decide what type of story they want to create‚ and what types of puppets and scripts they'll need for their play.
