The purpose of this activity is for students to learn how to prepare a basic meal or snack with little or no assistance from an adult. Many students go home and don't have an adult present to prepare a healthy meal for them. This activity gives them the tools to be self-sufficient in preparing a meal.
Number of Students Involved in This Activity: 21
Range of Student Ages: Seven to nine years old
Duration of Activity: 12 weeks
What is the academic content of this activity?
The Cooking activity requires students to create their own recipe books. In creating their recipe books‚ students engage in reading‚ writing‚ and art. As students prepare their meal‚ they use their mathematics skills to measure the proper ingredients to make a meal or snack.
How does this activity create strong relationships?
Students constantly interact with the teacher. Cooperative learning is used while assembling their food. Cross-aged groups are formed‚ which creates a mentoring relationship among students. Students learn to collaborate and work together as a team.
What opportunities are there for authentic decision making?
In all of the activities‚ students are given the opportunity to make decisions‚ from the creation of their recipe book and deciding on the food‚ to decorating the eating areas.
What student leadership opportunities are there?
In preparing their food‚ students receive little assistance from the teacher. In order to follow the recipe‚ students need to work as teams and take the initiative in achieving their goal.
