Activity Description

Students learn to build‚ decorate‚ and play small Celtic harps. They then join with the afterschool guitar class in arranging traditional Appalachian music and performing it for seniors at the senior center. They also perform for children in Kindergarten and first grade.

Number of Students Involved in This Activity: Ten

Range of Student Ages: Sixth to eighth grade

Duration of Activity: One and a half hours per week

Academic ContentWhat is the academic content of this activity? Math
Math skills are utilized in measuring and building the harps. They learn the basics of chord structure and the relationship between length of harp strings to the sound they produce.

Strong RelationshipsHow does this activity create strong relationships?
Students learn to work together when building the harps. Cooperation is required when creating musical arrangements. When students perform for younger children‚ they not only entertain‚ but serve as engaged positive role models. The seniors appreciate them and their considerable skills as well.

Students plan the music and the performances.

Students teach each other harp-playing skills.
