Students learn to build‚ decorate‚ and play small Celtic harps. They then join with the afterschool guitar class in arranging traditional Appalachian music and performing it for seniors at the senior center. They also perform for children in Kindergarten and first grade.

What is the academic content of this activity?
Math skills are utilized in measuring and building the harps. They learn the basics of chord structure and the relationship between length of harp strings to the sound they produce.
How does this activity create strong relationships?
Students learn to work together when building the harps. Cooperation is required when creating musical arrangements. When students perform for younger children‚ they not only entertain‚ but serve as engaged positive role models. The seniors appreciate them and their considerable skills as well.
