Learning Point Associates Announces the Center for High School Excellence

Web-Based Portal Provides Resources to Better Prepare Students for the Demands of the 21st Century

March 11, 2005

NAPERVILLE, ILLINOIS—Learning Point Associates announces the creation of the Center for High School Excellence, joining with teachers, principals, and policymakers across the nation to address the challenges that face American high schools today. The center will be responsive to the growing need of educators and policymakers for resources, research, and strategies that support standards-based reform forwarded through the U.S. Department of Education's Preparing America's Future High School initiative and the No Child Left Behind Act.

The official Web site for the Center for High School Excellence was launched last week during the 2005 North Central Regional Educational Laboratory (NCREL® ) Annual Conference, held in Bloomingdale, Illinois. The site, designed for use by all education stakeholders, is easy to access and navigate and includes the following:

  • Information on existing high school research.
  • Details on federal and state high school policies.
  • Links to resources that will assist practitioners with the implementation of high school strategies.

"There is growing evidence and data to indicate that increasing numbers of high school graduates in this country are not prepared for the demands of the 21st century. The effect of this failure to prepare our youth has consequences today and well into the future," said Gina Burkhardt, chief executive officer of Learning Point Associates. "The launch of the Center for High School Excellence is one of the contributions that Learning Point Associates is making to support success for all students—while they are in school and after graduation."

Another significant contribution that Learning Point Associates is making to support academic excellence for all students is the National Partnership for Teaching in At-Risk Schools. The partnership, officially launched by Virginia Governor Mark Warner last month, is a collaborative effort among Learning Point Associates, the Education Commission of the States (ECS), and ETS to focus on the policies and steps required to ensure that the country's neediest students get the best teachers. The partnership will work to raise the visibility of the issue and to mobilize policymakers, education and community leaders, funders, and other key leaders to address the problem at the state and local levels.

About Learning Point Associates
In 2003, Learning Point Associates became a nationally and internationally focused education nonprofit organization. We are a resource for all education stakeholders and work directly with K–16 practitioners, policymakers, and funders to build research- and technology-based products, tools, and resources; deliver capacity-building professional services and technical assistance; and conduct high-integrity evaluation and policy research.

In 1984, Learning Point Associates was founded as the North Central Regional Educational Laboratory (NCREL), one of the 10 regional educational laboratories funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The organization was chartered to perform and deliver research, development, technical assistance, and policy activities to address critical education issues for the seven-state Midwest region (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin). NCREL continues as a wholly owned subsidiary of Learning Point Associates.
