Detroit Public School Praised In Regional Magazine

Gabriel Richard Elementary Overcomes the Odds to Raise Student Achievement

October 1, 2001

Naperville, IL—Detroit Public Schools' Gabriel Richard Elementary is highlighted in the Fall 2001 issue of NCREL's Learning Point magazine as an exemplary model for increasing student achievement. The article, "Making the Grade in the Motor City," delves into the topic of closing the achievement gaps.

The school struggled for many years with students' performance on the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) until a combination of efforts sent their scores soaring. Principal Karen Dudley credits the improved student achievement to a balanced combination of professional development, good instruction, and teamwork. Her advice to struggling schools is to stay focused.

"Everything you do has to in some way support student achievement," says Dudley.

In addition to an interview with Dudley and Jane Farrelly, the school's reading specialist, the article offers teachers practical tips and suggestions for effective teamwork and high-quality professional development. Every issue of NCREL's Learning Point provides thought-provoking articles on key educational issues. The Fall 2001 issue includes features on teaching and tracking, and research from the Third International Mathematics and Science Study.

NCREL's Learning Point magazine is produced biannually and is circulated free of charge to nearly 35,000 educators. Copies can be ordered by calling 800-356-2735, ext. 6543, or by visiting the Product Catalog. Full text of articles can be accessed online at www.ncrel.org/info/nlp/.
