Project Description

The program is to establish, implement & sustain an after-school center designed to provide safe, supervised, & expanded learning opportunities for students in grades 6-8 & serving approx. 50 students regularly & targeting 30-90 intensely. We were able to take several field trips & see places the students had never seen, like Disney World & to the ocean. At the beginning of the year we administered the Scholastic Reading Inventory to determine lexiles for every student who was nominated for reading help. The 6th grader students we worked with went up an average of 108 points on the lexile scale; 7th graders went up 160 points, & 8th graders went up 29 points on the lexile scale. It showed us the READ 180 material had truly paid off. Once people in the community heard about the increase we had many parents calling over summer to get their children enrolled.
