NCREL® Honored By National Rural Education Association

NCREL to Receive Distinguished Howard A. Dawson Award

October 14, 2002

Naperville, IL—The North Central Regional Educational Laboratory (NCREL) will receive the National Rural Education Association (NREA) 2002 Howard A. Dawson Award for exemplary regional education services at NREA's Annual Conference on October 19 in Portland, Oregon.

NCREL has a long history of supporting rural education by providing a variety of research and development tools that address the specific needs of rural schools and districts. NCREL's Pulling Together Web site is a collection of resources—including those developed by the nation's 10 regional educational laboratories, which are funded by the U.S. Department of Education and charged with using research to improve teaching and learning in America's schools.

In addition, NCREL conducts important policy studies that address rural issues such as the recently published report Student Mobility in Rural Communities: What Are the Implications for Student Achievement?

Two other awards will be presented on October 19: Gary A. Baden, a retired superintendent in Malta, Montana, will receive the NREA Service Award, and Murray County Central Elementary School in Slayton, Minnesota, will receive the NREA Award for Exemplary Practices or Programs.
