Connecting With the Learner: An Equity Toolkit is a collaborative project between NCEMSC and the Michigan Department of Education. It is designed for professional developers with the intent that more equitable practice might be integrated into teaching, learning, assessment, and professional development. The original 600-page toolkit has been edited, refined, and is now available on CD-ROM.

Connecting With the Learner contains a series of activities that can be used as stand-alone activities, or as the framework around which a particular equity issue can be explored in depth from a systemic perspective (e.g., linking teaching with learning). The toolkit activities were designed from an engaged-learning perspective, allowing each participant to become actively engaged with new ideas and applications while developing ownership in the process. These activities are meant to be learning experiences, which require the facilitator to be sensitive to the adult learners, who will need to:

  • Share personal experiences and expertise.
  • Thoughtfully reflect on practice.
  • Participate in collegial discussion.
  • Support and challenge the change process.
