High School Feedback Report
For the past 18 years, Illinois has released a high school feedback report that provided high schools with information about the academic progress and success of their high school graduates who enrolled in postsecondary institutions. In an effort to increase use of this information and stimulate collaboration between high schools and institutions of higher education, ISBE, the Illinois Board of Higher Education, and the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) have developed a new format for the report, which will be called the Illinois High School to College Success Report. This year, the agencies will pilot the report, which will present data from the 2007–08 school year and will include information from the 48 community colleges as well as the 11 four-year institutions that accept freshmen. A major purpose of the report is to facilitate an improvement in student achievement through fostering collaboration between K–12 and postsecondary educators and policymakers to ensure that students have rigorous and relevant continuing opportunities to learn.
Over the last several months, Great Lakes West has been working with the state education agencies to disseminate information about the new pilot report and plan a series of regional meetings. The regional meetings will inform secondary and postsecondary educators of the contents of the pilot report and, more important, how the data may be used to support and promote collaborative discussions between these stakeholders.
ISBE Senior Staff Retreat
Great Lakes West staff helped plan and convene the ISBE Senior Staff Retreat on August 5, 2008, in Bloomington, Illinois. Great Lakes West collaborated with Susie Morrison, special assistant to the state superintendent, and staff from the National Comprehensive Center for Teacher Quality to plan and facilitate the meeting. ISBE senior staff members who attended the meeting included the state superintendent, the special assistant to the state superintendent, the assistant superintendent for standards and assessments, the director of public information, and the general counsel for ISBE.
The purpose of the retreat was to establish a strategic plan that would guide the work of ISBE during the next five years. To inform decision making, Great Lakes West provided ISBE with comprehensive data on the status of student achievement and teacher quality in Illinois. In addition, Great Lakes West engaged ISBE staff in activities that promoted consensus building and the development of a mission statement and a strategic plan.
