Module 1: Tutorial—Where Are We?

A key indicator of school and student success in Ohio is whether performance is at or above the proficient level. We begin with the proficiency levels in reading. This percentage tells us the proportion of students who scored at the proficient performance level or higher (i.e., above a scale score of 400 on the Ohio Achievement Test for reading). Printed reports containing these data have been distributed at your school.

The table is taken from the report card for a real Ohio school. For purposes of the Data Primer Tutorial, you are asked to treat this school as your school, and the Tutorial will talk about it as our school.

At right is a table showing the results for reading from a 2006-07 School Year Report Card. This shows results for each grade for a school, its district, and Ohio statewide. A similar table for your school appears on page 1 of the Report Card for your school. If you do not already have one, you can get a copy here.

Because accuracy matters with numbers, we need to make sure we are using the numbers we want to use from this table. The next several screens take you through the steps to finding the right data.
