Advanced Elements of Reading

Objective

To move schools and districts beyond a basic understanding of the essential elements of reading, with the end result being to move teachers from knowledge to practice.

Format

A one-day workshop for a small- or large-group setting (25 to 100 participants). Delivered either in a hands-on and/or lecture format, depending on client need.

Who Attends

Principals, assistant principals, teachers, reading specialists and reading coaches.

Participants Learn to

  • Integrate reading components and differentiate instruction based on the needs of their students.
  • Critically examine the core areas of phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension and fluency, by taking a more in-depth look at these areas and learning how they relate to greater student achievement.

Research Base

This workshop is heavily reliant on the work of the National Reading Panel and the findings of its extensive 2000 report, Teaching Children to Read: An Evidence-Based Assessment of the Scientific Research Literature on Reading and Its Implications for Reading Instruction. This research calls for explicit instruction based on the essential components of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency.
