Illinois State Board of Education Beginning Teacher Induction Pilot Program

Client: Illinois State Board of Education

The Illinois State Board of Education is piloting induction and mentoring programs for new teachers in school districts across the state. Learning Point Associates is providing technical assistance, consulting, evaluation and training for three districts to improve their new teacher support systems.

We are collaborating with Oswego School District 308 and The New Teacher Center from the University of California at Santa Cruz to develop the district's comprehensive mentoring program. The goals are to retain more new teachers and improve their teaching effectiveness, as well as bolster the abilities of veteran teachers to serve as mentors in the program.

In Geneseo School District 228, Learning Point Associates is helping formalize a mentoring program for new teachers. We are working with the district to develop criteria for selecting mentors, create written expectations, train mentors, and implement research-based observation techniques. We are also working with the district to design an evaluation and assessment system that will monitor and improve the program over time.

Plainfield District 202 is one of the fastest growing districts in Illinois; it has a teaching staff of nearly 350 new teachers, of which 80 percent is nontenured. Learning Point Associates has provided training to mentors and new teachers on the use of the High-Quality Teaching Online Professional Plan (HiTOPP), and results from our evaluation of HiTOPP are influencing the design of the training program.
