About Carole Fine
Carole Fine was a dedicated teacher and researcher who strongly believed in authentic, experience-based professional development for educators. From 1990 to 1997, Carole served as the director of the professional development program at the North Central Regional Educational Laboratory (NCREL). She also helped develop the successful Strategic Teaching and Reading Project.
Prior to joining NCREL, Carole was a special education teacher for students in Grades K12 for sixteen years. She was also a research associate for the Center for the Study of Reading at the University of Illinois. Her work there included school-based research on reciprocal teaching and other instructional strategies, professional development, and educational technology. She held a doctorate in instructional leadership from National Louis University.
In March of 1997, Carole lost her battle with ovarian cancer. In honor of our colleague and friend, NCREL established the Carole Fine Professional Development Internship in 1997 in her memory.
