A Day in the Life

3:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
At 3:00, the LA's BEST students and staff gather at the outdoor lunch pavilion. Students are divided by grade level for attendance and sit around tables to have their snacks.

3:30 p.m. to 4:35 p.m.
At 3:30, enrichment activities begin. These are designed to improve students' literacy skills and to teach them about the city's resources. Students read stories and do math games directly tied to the regular school-day curriculum. They also play soccer and football, sing and listen to music, dance, do arts and crafts, cook, or take a field trip to a local museum or theater.

4:35 p.m. to 5:35 p.m.
From 4:35 to 5:35, students work on their homework following homework assignment sheets from their regular school-day teachers. Many of the students work together. Others work independently or with a tutor. The LA's BEST staff moves through the room answering questions.

5:35 p.m.
At 5:35, parents begin to arrive and pick up their children. A largely bilingual staff is on hand to greet parents and talk to them about the day's activities and homework, and relay messages from classroom teachers.
